I love jewelry! Who doesn’t? Most girls I know love to accessorize with jewelry. I personally prefer silver jewelry to complement casual clothes. It’s just perfect for me coz it never goes out of style plus its very easy to mix and match with other accessories like gemstones, semi-precious stones and other metals. Because of this, I’ve managed to collect a good number of silver jewelry over the years.
The problem though is that silver jewelry looks really nice when its new but when it starts to tarnish and turns black on some parts, especially when it constantly gets in contact with sweat and sulfur in the air. Before I didn’t know what to do about it, so I either threw it out or gave it to others. What a waste!
When I started an accessories business a few years ago, I then learned how to care for fashion jewelry and let me just share some tips I have gathered over the years..
- Prevent it from tarnishing. How? Don’t allow it to be exposed excessively to chemicals, like chlorine, perfumes etc.
- Wash it regularly with mild soap and warm water. Rinse it well and dry it before keeping.
- Store your silver jewelry in cloth lined bags. Make sure you place one piece in each cloth bag or you can wrap each one with soft cloth. This would prevent pieces from rubbing each other.
- To clean tarnished silver jewelry, place an aluminum foil in a glass bowl, pour boiling water, mix some baking soda and salt. Stir to dissolve. Place the jewelry in the mixture and swish it making sure it makes contact with the foil. Soak it for a few minutes. Clean stubborn dirt with soft-bristled toothbrush. Pat with soft cloth to dry.
